Sofia (ancient Greek σοφία – wisdom) is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria, but also the 12 th largest city in the European Union.  Sofia is a city with a population of 1,263,884 people(registered by address), which represents 17% of the population.  Located in central western Bulgaria, in Sofia valley surrounded by mountains Vitosha to the south, Mount Liulin and west Balkan Mountain to the north.  And total area was 492 square kilometers and the average altitude of 550 m e.  This makes it the fourth highest capital city in Europe.  It is built on four terraces of the River Iskar and its tributaries Perlovska and Vladayska.  In its center, as well as Ovcha fonts, Knyajevo, Gorna Banya and Pancharevo are mineral springs.  Sofia climate is continental. 
It is a major administrative, industrial, transport, cultural and educational center of the country, as it focuses sixth of industrial production in Bulgaria.  There are also The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, many universities, theaters, cinemas, and the National Gallery of Art, Archaeology, History, Natural History and other museums.  Sofia is named after the former cathedral of the city “Hagia Sophia”.  It was declared the capital in 1879.
In many places in the city center are reserved visible archaeological monuments from Roman times. They fit in the modern European type of city with many newly constructed modern buildings and monuments.  The motto of the city is “growing, never old“.
